It is also important that we comply with the driving rules on security aspects. Do you know what happens if you are stopped at a checkpoint and you are not properly identified or do not have a valid MOT? A situation without the slightest risk can result in a heavy fine or even the withdrawal of points.

There are four types of recklessness that are usually the most common, sometimes due to ignorance, but which can cause major problems by breaking the rules of driving. Here are four rules that you must obey if you really want to drive safely.

Circulate correctly identified

Both you and your car must be correctly identified. You must have a valid driving licence (in your pocket, not at home) and your car must have all the papers in order. To be able to drive your vehicle you must have three valid documents:

Driving licence. In other words, your licence that recognises that you have the knowledge to drive a vehicle. Since the introduction of the points-based licence, there are rules and offences that affect the balance on your licence. The maximum number of points you can have is 15, and the minimum number of points to be able to drive is 1. Each infraction subtracts points, and driving without points on your licence is an offence and is punishable by a prison sentence of 3 to 6 months or a fine of 12 to 24 months or community service of 31 to 90 days, as stated in the DGT website.

The registration certificate. This document certifies that your vehicle is registered and can be driven. It contains the information that identifies the vehicle: technical data, chassis number, engine capacity... All vehicles must be authorised to be on the road and failure to have this authorisation can lead to a fine of up to 500 euros.

MOT certification. Finally, if your car is more than four years old, it must pass the technical vehicle inspection. This is a check that ensures that it is in a safe condition to drive, both for you and for other drivers. Failure to carry it or driving without this authorisation can lead to the immobilisation of the vehicle or a fine of up to 200 euros.

Failure to produce any of these documents results in a financial fine in most cases, although driving with a suspended licence or being banned from using the vehicle results in the deduction of 4 points.

Driving with valid insurance

This is another of the key points for safe driving. In order to be able to drive any vehicle, it must have a cover that guarantees the safety of its crew members in any accident and the damage caused to others. The obligation to drive with a car insurance helps to ensure peace of mind when driving. Typically, car insurance has two types of cover:

Compulsory, which serves to compensate for damage we may cause to third parties, either because we hit someone else or because we collide with another car.

VolunteersTravel assistance, glass insurance, theft, fire or, if we want the maximum cover, an All Risks insurance.

Select the coverage of our car insurance will generally depend on our needs and budget. It is advisable not to stick only to the budget: your safety and that of your family, and the total guarantee when driving is much more important.

Controlling speed and speed cameras

Driving at the recommended speed is the best advice you can give as a driver. However, sometimes we fail to do this, and then we have to pay the consequences. It is important to control your speed, but it is also interesting to know the speed at which speed cameras are triggered. This is not a standard rule, as it depends on the type of road you are driving on, the type of radar....

This means that mobile radars apply a margin of error of 7 kilometres per hour on roads with a maximum speed of less than 100 kilometres per hour, as reported by Cadena Ser. In the case of fixed speed cameras, the DGT reduces the margin of error to just five kilometres per hour.

However, the best safety is always to drive at the recommended speed.

Passing the ITV regularly

We have already indicated that one of the documents that we must carry in our vehicle is the ITV up to date. In this vehicle inspection it is analysed that it meets the minimum requirements to circulate, therefore aspects such as the following are checked:

On the outside of the vehicleThe quality of the wheels, number plates securely attached and legible, bodywork damage, quality of bumpers, windscreen wipers, proper functioning of lights, etc.

Inside the vehicle: brakes, shock absorbers, oil, plus seat belts, speedometer, gas control, etc.

It is always advisable to check aspects such as lights, windscreen wipers, anchorages, tyres, in short, that there are no obvious external operating defects. Although sometimes, when the vehicle is many years old, it is recommended to have a pre-ITV, which is a check carried out in your trusted garage to guarantee, as far as possible, whether or not you can pass the ITV.

Are you unsure about how to drive safer?
